For the first time since 2010, the death penalty was carried out in the US state of Louisiana. This was reported on March 18 by The New York Times (NYT).

"Almost immediately after taking office last year, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry passed bills that increased prison sentences and abolished parole for most new convicts. And he argued that the resumption of executions after a long lull would be a signal that the state is serious about fighting crime," the newspaper reports.

It clarifies that 46-year-old Jesse Hoffman, who was accused of rape and murder in 1996, was punished. The sentence was carried out by nitrogen injection.

"For too long, Louisiana has failed to fulfill the promises made to the victims of our state's most brutal crimes," the governor commented on the adoption of a protocol to allow executions by gas.

The execution of a person with nitrogen involves depriving him of access to oxygen, since the condemned person is forced to inhale pure nitrogen through a mask.

On March 8, the death penalty was executed by firing squad in the United States for the first time in 15 years. The convict chose this method of taking his own life. He was sentenced to death for a double murder in 2002. The dead were relatives of his ex-girlfriend, whom he also tried to kidnap.
