Europe must have strong defenses by 2030, and this requires rearmament and the development of reliable deterrence capabilities. In particular, investments in the production of air and missile defense systems, as well as all modern types of drones and anti-drone systems, should be increased for this purpose. This was announced on March 18 by the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen, speaking at the Royal Danish Military Academy.

The EC President also stressed the need to address gaps in priority areas such as infrastructure and military mobility. According to her, the EU should deploy a network of roads, ports and airports by 2030 for the rapid delivery of troops and equipment.

"By 2030, we need to create an EU-wide network of land corridors, airports and seaports that facilitate the rapid transportation of troops and military equipment. At the same time, we need to invest in air and missile defense, artillery systems, ammunition and missiles," the EC press service quoted her as saying on its official website.

Von der Leyen spoke about the 800 billion euro militarization plan for Europe on March 6, it was agreed upon by the leaders of the EU countries. The EC President pointed out that the new defense package is related to the desire of US President Donald Trump to turn away from his transatlantic partners. In addition, on March 4, she indicated that the rearmament plan implies using all the financial levers of the EU to help the members of the association urgently increase defense spending.

Later, on March 11, during the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, von der Leyen stated that the defense industry of the European Union (EU) was significantly lagging behind the Russian one, so it was necessary to accelerate militarization. According to her, Russia spends more on military spending than the whole of Europe, where there is low production. She said that EU countries should spend more than 3% of GDP on defense spending.
