The German government will propose Foreign Minister Annalena Burbok as a candidate for the post of President of the United Nations General Assembly (UN). This was reported on March 18 by the DPA news agency, citing sources.

"The Federal government intends to nominate a politician from the Green Party as the German candidate for the post of President of the UN General Assembly for 2025-2026," the newspaper writes.

Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, called the plans of the German government strange.

"It will be strange to see the granddaughter of a Nazi, who is proud of the "feat of her grandfather", in the year of the 80th anniversary of Victory as chairman of the General Assembly," she told RIA Novosti.

Early elections to the Bundestag were held in Germany on February 23. As expected, the opposition bloc of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany and the Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) won, gaining almost 28.6% of the vote.

The second place was taken by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party with 20.8%. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice (SSV) failed to enter the Bundestag. The Greens are not involved in coalition negotiations, so they are unlikely to be part of the new government.
