Anapa is preparing for the holiday season: will it be possible to swim in the Black Sea in 2025

Anapa, one of the main resorts of the Black Sea region, is preparing for the season after an accident with tankers. New emissions of small amounts of petroleum products are regularly recorded on the beaches, most recently on March 19. Rescuers and volunteers continue to clean the coastline, eliminating the effects of new fuel emissions. The accident occurred on December 15, 2024, when the tankers Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 crashed in the Kerch Strait. Both vessels were carrying more than 9.2 tons of fuel oil, of which about 2.4 thousand tons spilled into the sea as a result of the accident. This has seriously damaged the flora and fauna of the region. For more information about how beaches are being prepared for the holiday season and whether it will be possible to swim in the Black Sea in 2025, see the Izvestia article.
Will the holiday season be opened in Anapa
A fuel oil spill in the Black Sea has jeopardized the summer tourist season in Anapa. The official conclusion from Rospotrebnadzor on whether it is safe to rest on the Black Sea coast near Anapa will be published in March. At the same time, in January, the head of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Alexander Kozlov, said that Anapa's fuel-polluted beaches were planned to be restored by the beginning of the summer season in 2026.
According to environmentalists, beaches in the Krasnodar Territory, polluted with toxic fuels, will not be able to be used for at least one holiday season. In addition, rising sea temperatures in summer can trigger new toxic emissions.
According to Natalia Kostenko, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Tourism and Tourism Infrastructure Development, local authorities and hoteliers are going to save the upcoming summer season on the Black Sea coast through museums, ecotropics, swimming pools and entertainment events.
"Museums are an underestimated resource that can attract tourists in the current situation. The coastal cities have art galleries, stunning museums with antiques, and antiquities found during archaeological excavations at the site of ancient cities that used to be located on the Black Sea coast. Festivals and concerts will also help attract tourists," the deputy said.
When did the last fuel oil emissions occur in Anapa
Minor emissions of fuel oil in the Anapa region are recorded regularly. On March 19, pollution was detected during daily monitoring for the third time in a week. Small oil fuel emissions were detected on the beach in the village of Dzhemete, in the Vyselkovsky and Kavkazsky districts, as well as in the area of the Premiere center and the Kristall sanatorium. Previously, emissions were recorded on the coastline between the village of Vityazevo and the resort village of Blagoveshchenskaya. This was announced by the operational headquarters of the Krasnodar Territory.
The ministry noted that when coastal pollution is detected, monitoring specialists first remove new emissions, and then return to re-cleaning the main area. According to the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, emissions of petroleum products periodically appear on the coast due to rising air temperatures.
How regions prepare beaches for the holiday season
According to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, since the beginning of the work, about 409 km of coastline has been cleaned, more than 151 thousand tons of contaminated sand and soil have been collected. Also, in three months, 5,378 thousand square meters of the seabed were surveyed using remote-controlled uninhabited underwater vehicles. Rescuers and volunteers collect polluted soil on the shore, specialists remove the oil-water mixture from the water area and treat it with a sorbent. Special compressor stations are used to remove fuel oil from the bottom of the Black Sea.
In the coastal zone of Anapa and Temryuk district, more than 2.5 thousand (almost 126 tons) bags of oil-containing waste were collected at 19 sites with a length of 14 km. In March, in the Krasnodar Territory, while monitoring 265 km of the coastline, spot emissions of petroleum products were detected in the area from Cape Panagia in the Temryuk district to the Central Beach of Anapa. Over 149.4 thousand tons of polluted sand and soil were collected from the coastline.
In Crimea, 525.4 km of coastline continues to be surveyed: from the Kerch city district to the Portovoye settlement of the Razdolnensky district. Rescuers managed to clear 226.8 km of coastline and collect about 780 tons of polluted sand.
In Sevastopol, monitoring groups regularly check 165 km of coastline between the settlements of Laspi and Andreevka. In total, more than 835 tons of fuel-contaminated sand and soil were collected at this site and taken to landfills for disposal.
Tanker crash in the Kerch Strait: consequences
The authorities of the southern regions are still eliminating the consequences of the fuel oil spill in the Kerch Strait, which occurred on December 15, 2024 as a result of the collapse of two oil tankers Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239. According to the emergency services, the tankers transported about 9.2 thousand tons of fuel oil. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that about 40% of the fuel leaked into the sea as a result of the accident.
The fuel oil spill led to the deaths of fish, dolphins and birds, and pollution of the seabed and coastline. The ecological disaster affected four regions: Krasnodar Territory, the Republic of Crimea, Sevastopol and Zaporizhia.
The accident was the world's first case of flooding of the sea with heavy fuel oil brand M100. This type of fuel does not float to the surface, but remains in the water column or settles to the bottom due to its density, which makes it difficult to clean the sea and coastline. Special teams of municipalities, as well as employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and volunteers, are engaged in eliminating the consequences of the fuel oil spill on a daily basis.
Which resorts in Russia can you relax in the summer of 2025
Other reservoirs of the country can serve as an alternative to the Black Sea this summer, Natalia Kostenko noted. Russians can go to the resorts of the Caspian Sea in Dagestan, Lake Baikal, and visit the picturesque lakes of the Altai Territory and Buryatia. Lovers of fishing and wildlife can explore the Far East, the deputy concluded.
According to Aleksan Mkrtchyan, Vice President of the Alliance of Travel Agencies, it will also be possible to relax on the beaches of the Black Sea in 2025 if you go to Gelendzhik or to the resorts of Crimea — Alupka, Alushta, Yalta and Foros. Their coastal area was not affected by the fuel oil spill, so it is safe to swim in these places.
In Russia, you can also relax on the Sea of Azov, where the most popular destinations are the city of Yeysk and the village of Golubitskaya. In the second half of the summer season, you can visit the Baltic Sea, which warms up to +24 degrees by the beginning of August. Travel agents advise choosing the village of Yantarny or the Curonian Spit for a beach holiday, where the cleanest sand and the warmest sea are available.
