Israel unilaterally ended the truce and began airstrikes in the Gaza Strip due to the refusal of the radical Palestinian movement Hamas to release the remaining 59 hostages. This was announced on March 18 by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz.

"Tonight, we returned to the fighting in Gaza due to Hamas' refusal to release the hostages and amid its threats to harm IDF soldiers and Israeli communities," The Times of Israel quoted him as saying.

At the same time, the families of people held captive by Hamas point to the contradictory position of Israel and believe that the resumption of fire will endanger the hostages.

"We will not stop fighting until all the hostages return home and all the goals of the war are achieved," Katz added.

On March 18, the IDF announced the resumption of military operations against Hamas in Gaza. As reported by Reuters, Israeli airstrikes damaged three houses in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza: a building in Gaza City and targets in Khan Yunis and Rafah. Later, journalist Ravid said that Israel had warned the administration of US President Donald Trump in advance about the resumption of attacks on Gaza.
