Taking antiarrhythmic medications can trigger depression as a side effect. Patimat Yakhyaeva, a psychiatrist and psychotherapist at the European Medical Center (EMC), told Gazeta about this on March 18.Ru».

"The first reports about the relationship between depression and antiarrhythmic drugs appeared back in 1967. Then a study was conducted: among 89 patients who took propranolol, almost one in three (27 people) began to suffer from depression, and two committed suicide," the doctor explained.

At the same time, a theory arose about the high lipophilicity (the ability to dissolve in fats) of such drugs.

The specialist pointed out that there is a link between depression and beta-blockers, the side effects of which are usually weakness, fatigue and nightmares.

"By the way, for water-soluble beta-blockers, all these unpleasant symptoms are less characteristic, since they penetrate the blood-brain barrier worse. In my practice, I have not seen examples when depression occurred while taking antiarrhythmic drugs," Yakhyaeva clarified.

On March 17, Ulankina's doctor spoke about the dangers of expired and counterfeit medicines. According to her, the situation with counterfeit drugs is more serious: they do not contain the necessary active substance, and are also made from low-quality, and sometimes even toxic raw materials, with a violation of production technology. In such cases, medications can have an unpredictable effect on the body, the specialist explained.
