US President Donald Trump has shifted responsibility for Ukraine to Europe. This was reported to Izvestia on March 17 by French columnist and former diplomat Laurent Michelon.

The expert explained this step as necessary for the reorientation of the American leadership towards Asia.

"The United States has decided, and Donald Trump stated this during his election campaign, that after his election he will shift his attention from Russia to China. To implement this, since the US army and budget are currently under strain due to Ukraine, all funding, weapons and labor are being sent there. This should be refocused on Asia and, in particular, on China. To achieve this goal, they must shift the burden onto the EU," he explained.

However, the United States has a problem with this line: the European Union cannot present it properly and declares that the American leadership simply does not want to deal with it.

"So talking about EU sovereignty, about strategic sovereignty away from the United States, is something that distracts the attention of the French people," Michelon concluded.

The observer also pointed out that the UK bears a huge responsibility for the continuation of the Ukrainian conflict. At the same time, the results of the settlement will depend only on the United States and Russia, he noted.

"The people who started the confrontation, the United States, and the people who are winning it, Russia, are going to negotiate. And the results will depend on these two main actors," he stated.

Earlier in the day, White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt, commenting on the upcoming conversation between the US leader and Russian President Vladimir Putin, said that Russia and the United States are closer than ever to resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

The American leader said earlier that day that he was going to have a conversation with Putin on March 18. According to him, there are currently "good chances" to resolve the Ukrainian conflict.
