The trade differences between the United States and China open up opportunities for Russian agricultural producers, said Nikolai Kovalev, senior analyst for the consumer sector, e-commerce, real estate and agriculture at Euler Analytical Technologies. He told Izvestia about this on March 17. In his opinion, the greatest prospects are in the export of pork and grain crops.

Since March 10, 2025, China has imposed duties of 10-15% on agricultural products from the United States, whose annual exports to China amount to about $30 billion. The restrictions apply to a wide range of goods and can affect the global balance of supply and demand, the expert emphasized.

"In particular, we are talking about pork markets, as well as cereals, legumes and oilseeds. In 2024, China imported 1.3 million tons of pork, of which 16% came from the United States. Thanks to government support, Chinese producers have increased pork production by 30% over the past five years (to 57 million tons in 2024), which is why imports have decreased by 75% from their peak values in 2020," Kovalev said.

According to him, the Chinese market remains attractive to Russian producers: pork prices in China are on average 60-80% higher than in Russia, while supplies to China will allow Russian companies to overcome stagnation in exports: its volumes in 2024 were close to 300 thousand tons per year.

"As for cereals, legumes and oilseeds, the potential volume of supplies is fixed in the Russian-Chinese agreement of 2023: the contract was concluded for the supply of 70 million tons of crops grown in the Urals, Siberia and the Far East. For comparison, China's grain production is 435 million tons per year, while imports are 28 million tons per year. The actual volume of supplies will depend not only on the production of agricultural products in Russia, but also on the import substitution of grain in China," the analyst concluded.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump doubled duties on goods from China from 10% to 20% on March 4. In turn, China imposed retaliatory import duties on a number of American products and imposed export controls on 15 companies.
