The European Union (EU) is exploring the possibility of financing Radio Liberty media (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation) after the US decision to suspend support for the broadcaster. This was announced on March 17 by the head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas.

She expressed regret over Washington's decision, but at the same time noted that Europe would not be able to provide money to the radio station automatically — there are many other applicants for financing from the European Union.

"The [EU] foreign ministers insisted on discussing this and finding a way to finance it.... So we will see what we can do," Kallas said at a press conference following the EU Council meeting in Brussels.

On March 14, the White House announced that US President Donald Trump had signed a decree reducing the functions and work of employees of several agencies to combat bureaucracy, including the Agency for Global Media (USAGM).

This agency coordinates the work of US-funded media outlets, including Voice of America (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation) and Radio Liberty. On March 16, the Reuters news agency reported that the United States had suspended funding for both radio stations.
