The US State Department pointed to the need to stop the fighting in Ukraine.

The United States is striving to achieve sustainable peace in Ukraine, but first it needs to stop the fighting. This was announced on March 17 by the official representative of the State Department of the country, Tammy Bruce, on the air of the Fox Business channel.
"To talk about a peace that will last not a month, not six months or a year, you first need to stop the killing," Bruce said, as quoted by RIA Novosti.
According to the representative of the State Department, the purpose of the negotiations between the United States and the Russian delegations in Riyadh and Ukraine in Jeddah was precisely the cessation of armed clashes.
Earlier in the day, political analyst Alexander Asafov, in an interview with Izvestia, said that currently US President Donald Trump is sending contradictory signals on settlement issues in Ukraine, so we should wait for Washington's real actions to resolve the crisis.
The day before, the American leader told reporters that he was going to hold a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 18. He also noted that currently there are "good chances" to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. Then, on Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced the preparation of a conversation between the two leaders.
