A criminal case has been opened in the Krasnoyarsk Territory over the death of the driver of a car that caught fire after a collision with a truck. The regional State Traffic Inspectorate announced this in its Telegram channel on Monday, March 17.

The accident occurred the night before, on March 16, on the 622nd km of the federal highway R-255 "Siberia". It was previously established that a 43-year-old Scania truck driver crashed into a VAZ driven by a 54-year-old man who was driving along the side of the road in the same direction, writes KrasnoyarskMedia news agency.

"As a result of the collision, the car caught fire, and the driver was killed. The second participant in the accident was not injured," the traffic police said in a statement.

A criminal case has been opened against the driver of the heavy truck under Part 3 of Article 264 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation "Violation of traffic rules that negligently caused the death of a person." The man is on his own recognizance, he faces up to five years in prison.

Earlier on March 17, the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia informed Izvestia that 405 road accidents were recorded on Russian roads over the past weekend, in which 45 people were killed and 515 injured. 36 of the dead were drivers and passengers of vehicles.
