The expert called the USSR domain in demand

The domain .SU, which was delegated to the Soviet Union in 1990, but continued to function after the collapse of the USSR, is in demand and is actively developing, the director of the Coordination Center for .RU/ domains told Izvestia.Russian Federation Andrey Vorobyov on March 17. Along with .RU and .In the Russian Federation, it is part of the Russian national domain zone.
"Today, more than 112,000 usernames from 50 countries are registered in the domain zone. In addition, it has long acquired a supranational and historical character. This year.SU will celebrate its 35th anniversary, and we have every reason to believe that it will continue to function for the benefit of Internet users," the expert emphasized.
Vorobyov clarified that the Russian side consistently advocates the preservation of the domain, but the issue of its closure is periodically raised in the industry community, causing discussions and various speculations.
"After information about a possible domain tagging appeared in the media .SU, the issue of the fate of the domain was raised at the ICANN conference (Corporation for Domain and IP Address Management. 82 last week, held in Seattle. Both the president and CEO of ICANN, Kurt Lindqvist, unequivocally replied that the corporation had not sent an official notification to the registry.SU and currently there are no schedules for its removal. He added that discussions on the status of the domain will continue in accordance with the policy developed by the ccNSO (organization for the support of national top-level domains. — Ed.)," the expert noted.
He explained that, according to this policy, a domain can be closed if the corresponding two-letter country code is removed from the ISO 3166-1 list. However, the "SU" code has not been deleted, but is preserved in the ISO standard as a reserved one. The UK codes "UK" and the European Union "EU" have the same status.
Earlier, the media reported that ICANN allegedly plans to stop supporting the domain of the Soviet Union by 2030. But on March 13, the Russian Research Institute for the Development of Public Networks announced on its website that this information periodically appears in the public field, but does not correspond to reality. The registry has no plans to liquidate the domain.SU and no formal actions have been taken by ICANN, they stressed.
On February 13, Roskomnadzor reported that 704.8 thousand Internet pages were deleted or blocked in 2024. Among them were information about gambling (252.6 thousand materials), pro-drug content (111.6 thousand), extremist and terrorist content (42.6 thousand), unreliable socially significant information, including about a special military operation (40.1 thousand).
