Currently, US President Donald Trump is sending contradictory signals on settlement issues in Ukraine, so we should wait for Washington's real actions to resolve the crisis. This was stated by political analyst Alexander Asafov in an interview with Izvestia on March 17.

The day before, the American leader told reporters that he was going to hold a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 18. He also noted that there are currently "good chances" to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. Then, on Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced the preparation of a conversation between the two leaders.

"Trump is making headlines, he's not shaping Russian-American relations right now. Therefore, any of his statements should be treated with a certain degree of skepticism, since he performs his informational tasks. Judging by the words of the American side, there is some progress in the discussions, at least we can draw this conclusion," Asafov commented.

In his opinion, it is imprudent to make predictions about the negotiations based on Trump's PR strategy. Therefore, it is necessary to wait for real results, statements from Moscow and, preferably, documents with conditions, concluded the interlocutor of the publication.

Earlier, on March 16, the American leader's special envoy for the Middle East, Stephen Witkoff, said that great progress had been made in discussing the Ukrainian conflict at a meeting with Putin in Moscow. He also stressed that the distance in the negotiations between the Russian Federation and the United States on Ukraine is decreasing. Among other things, Witkoff noted that the upcoming telephone conversation between Putin and Trump is also expected to be "positive and constructive."
