About half of the Ukrainian planes and helicopters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) were shot down by their own air defense system. Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Mariana Bezuglaya told about this on March 17 in her Telegram channel.

"About half of our planes and helicopters are shot down by their own air defenses," Bezuglaya said.

She recalled the case of F-16 pilot Alexei Mesy, who was shot down by his own air defense in 2024. Bezuglaya added that the results of the investigation were promised to be published six months ago, but this has not yet been done.

Earlier, on August 29, 2024, Ukraine confirmed the crash of one of the six F-16 fighter jets transferred by Washington to Kiev. According to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, during the approach to the next target, communication was lost with one of the aircraft, and later it turned out that the pilot had died.
