Germany will provide €300 million ($326 million) to international organizations to promote the peace process in Syria. This was announced on March 17 by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Annalena Berbok.

"Germany will provide the UN and other organizations with another €300 million for the peace process, for people in Syria and in the region," Berbok said before a meeting of the Council on Foreign Affairs in Brussels.

The Foreign Minister stressed that the Europeans stand for a "free and peaceful Syria," but they will continue to insist on the need for an inclusive political process. She called on the Transitional Government of the Arab Republic to comprehensively investigate all incidents involving civilians and bring those responsible to justice, as well as ensure control over various members of the security apparatus.

According to Berbok, the bulk of the €300 million funding will be directed to humanitarian aid, support for civil society, solving psychosocial problems and restoring the education system. She added that this step is necessary to ensure a stable future for children in Syria.

Earlier, on March 8, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that 134 civilians were killed during a large-scale operation in western Syria as a result of fierce clashes between Syrian security forces and local armed groups.

On March 7, the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed alarm over the sharp escalation of the situation in Syria. Russia is counting on assistance in normalizing the situation from states that have influence on the situation in Syria, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.
