Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko met with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in Baku, the parties discussed the expansion of trade, economic and cultural cooperation between the states. This was announced on Monday, March 17, by the Federation Council.
"The Speaker of the Federation Council noted that the leaders of Russia and Azerbaijan are in constant contact and thanked them for the attention they pay to inter—parliamentary and interregional cooperation, which are important components of interstate relations," the message says.
Matvienko and Aliyev also touched upon the current international situation during the discussion.
The Federation Council delegation headed by Matvienko is on an official visit to Azerbaijan on March 16-17. The day before, Matvienko also held a meeting with First Vice President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva.
Earlier, on March 14, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Moscow welcomes the completion of negotiations on the text of the draft agreement on peace and the establishment of interstate relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The Russian side also confirmed its offer to provide its own platform for contacts between representatives of the two countries, as well as the signing of a peace treaty.
