Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who recently took office, held telephone talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on March 15, as well as with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Carney posted on the social network X (ex. Twitter) that the purpose of his calls was to discuss the path to peace in Eastern Europe.

"Canada supports the proposal for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine," he wrote.

At the same time, the Canadian prime minister promised to strengthen control over compliance with anti-Russian sanctions and provide military assistance to the Kiev regime.

Carney replaced then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as head of the ruling Liberal Party of Canada on March 9. In an internal party vote, he won 86% of the vote and defeated former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. On March 14, the new leader of the ruling party took the oath of office as head of government.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on March 13 that he agreed with the proposal to cease hostilities in Ukraine. At the same time, he asked whether the Kiev regime would use the 30-day truce in its favor — whether the forced mobilization of Ukrainians and military support for Ukraine by the West would continue during this time. The Russian leader also asked how control and verification would be organized and what guarantees would be provided for compliance with the terms of the truce.
