The Voice of America and Radio Liberty radio stations (recognized as foreign agents in the Russian Federation) suspended their work after the decision of the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM) to stop financing them. This happened due to a decree by former US President Donald Trump on government spending cuts, the Reuters news agency reported on March 16.

"Financing of two US news services <... It was terminated the day after President Donald Trump ordered the closure of the parent company of the state—funded media outlet and six other federal agencies," the publication said.

According to the publication, some Republicans have accused Voice of America and other state-funded media outlets of being biased against conservatives.

"All I've ever wanted to do is shoot straight and tell the truth, no matter which government I've covered. If this is a threat to someone, so be it," William Gallo, head of the Seoul bureau of the Voice of America, told Reuters.

The agency also noted that the entrepreneur and head of the Department of Public Administration Efficiency (DOGE) Elon Musk was dismissive of the cuts in the USAGM.

"While this global government propaganda agency was shut down, it was temporarily renamed the Department of Propaganda Everywhere (DOPE)," he wrote on X.

In February, Musk called for the closure of these radio stations, saying that "no one listens to them anymore."

Michael Abramowitz, director of the Voice of America company, announced on March 15 that more than 1.3 thousand employees had been placed on administrative leave. He clarified that he was also sent on vacation along with other employees of the radio station.

On March 14, the White House announced that US President Donald Trump had signed a decree reducing the functions and work of employees of several agencies to combat bureaucracy, including the Agency for Global Media (USAGM). This agency coordinates the work of US-funded media outlets, including Voice of America and Svoboda./A free Europe."
