Adam Beler, US President Donald Trump's special envoy for hostage affairs, who was involved in contacts with the Palestinian Hamas movement, has resigned. This was reported on March 15 by the American portal Axios, citing two White House officials.

"This step <...> is intended to move Beler to another position as a presidential envoy with broader powers and without having to confirm [his] appointment in the [U.S.] Senate," the article says.

It is noted that last week the special envoy found himself at the center of a scandal after his meeting with representatives of Hamas in the Qatari capital Doha. These negotiations angered the administration of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as some Republican senators in the United States. Under these circumstances, it has become more difficult for the Trump administration to get the Senate to confirm Beler as special envoy for hostages.

White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt, in turn, told the portal that the official would continue to work on hostage issues in the federal government.

Earlier, on March 14, Hamas announced its readiness to release the hostage, a US citizen, as well as to hand over the bodies of four dead prisoners. The movement clarified that it had made this decision after receiving an offer from the mediators the day before to resume negotiations.

CNN reported on March 13 that the US special envoy had submitted to Israel and Hamas a new proposal for the Gaza Strip, ensuring the release of hostages held in the enclave in exchange for an extension of the ceasefire in Gaza. It was clarified that the exact number of living and dead hostages that the movement must release during the extended truce, as well as the number of Palestinian prisoners that Israel must release, remain the subject of negotiations.
