The correct ring size allows you to feel comfortable and not lose it soon after purchase. It's quite easy to make a choice in the store, but what if the jewelry is purchased as a gift or ordered online? Izvestia has compiled three proven ways to take measurements at home.

What is the ring size?

According to the Russian standard, the size of the ring corresponds to its inner diameter, expressed in millimeters, while the gradation usually occurs in increments of 0.5 mm. For example, a ring with a diameter of 16 mm has a size of 16.

If the jewelry is purchased online in a foreign store, it should be borne in mind that different measurement systems may be used in different countries, however, size matching tables are often posted on websites.

How to determine the ring size yourself

To determine the size of the ring at home, you can use improvised means. There are several ways to do this.

The easiest and most reliable way to determine the size of a ring is to use a finger gauge. This is a tool consisting of several metal rings of different diameters, each of which corresponds to a certain size. It can be purchased on marketplaces and used if necessary.

This method is suitable when choosing jewelry for any person, but it will not be possible to use it when preparing a surprise, since the intentions of the giver will immediately become obvious.

If you do not have a finger gauge at hand, you can find out the diameter of the ring using a thread or a paper strip. They should be wrapped around the base of the finger on which the decoration is selected. Then mark the intersection point of the ends and measure the resulting segment using a ruler. The resulting circumference must be divided by the number π (approximately 3.14), which will be the diameter of the finger. The numbers should be rounded up to the nearest standard ring size.

The third method is more "confidential", but it is suitable only if there is a ring that can be used as a sample. Such an ornament should sit comfortably on the right finger. You can simply measure its inner diameter (the distance between the walls inside the ring) using a ruler or a caliper. The resulting value is in millimeters and will correspond to the size. Alternatively, put the decoration on paper, draw an inner contour and measure the distance between opposite points — this method is more reliable.

Another option is to ask friends or relatives for help, for example, to ask the exact size of the ring from the girl's mother.

To avoid mistakes, you can choose a sliding ring with an adjustable size. Or, before buying, check with the seller whether it can be replaced or adjusted in size.

When to take measurements, what else needs to be considered

The accuracy of determining the ring size depends on the time of day and environmental conditions. For example, in the late afternoon, in the heat, after active sports, going to the sauna or drinking a lot of liquid, fingers may swell, and in the cold, on the contrary, they become a little thinner. Thus, the optimal time for measurements is in the afternoon at a comfortable temperature.

It is also important to consider the width of the jewelry itself. If the ring is wide (more than 5 millimeters), it is better to give preference to a 0.5 mm larger size, since such models fit more tightly to the skin. And if the decoration is thin, you can focus on the result obtained during measurements, rounding it up to standard sizes.

For example, if the measurement turned out to be 17.42, then in the first case it is worth choosing a ring of size 18, and in the second — 17.5, this will ensure a comfortable fit.
