Officials in Europe have begun discussing again whether Hungary can be stripped of its voting rights because of Budapest's firm position on Russia, as the country may block joint decisions by the European Union (EU), including those directed against Moscow. This was reported on March 14 by the British newspaper Financial Times (FT).

"Many officials are again openly discussing the possibility of applying the procedure under Article 7 [of the EU Treaty] against Hungary, <...> but they are well aware of the political problems and consequences of such a step," the article says.

As the FT explains, this is the most extreme measure to deprive a member state of the right to vote, the Newspaper added.Ru». It is noted that the probability of depriving Hungary of the right to vote will increase even more if Budapest does not support the extension of economic sanctions against Russia at the next vote.

Anita Hipper, a representative of the European Commission (EC), said on March 13 that the countries of the European Union (EU) were not discussing measures to ease sanctions against Russia — on the contrary, the EU was considering a new package of restrictive measures. Speaking about Hungary's blocking of the extension of personal sanctions against Russia, which expire on March 15, Hipper pointed out that the EC "is making every effort to extend them."

Prior to that, on March 10, it was reported that advisers to US President Donald Trump were working on measures to ease anti-Russian sanctions. It was noted that this would include restrictions on oil prices. On the same day, Euractiv reported that the EU was alarmed by Hungary's possible attempt to disrupt the extension of anti-Russian sanctions. According to media reports, it is impossible to extend sanctions without Hungary's consent.
