There were five Russian citizens on board the container ship Solong, which collided with a tanker in the North Sea, one of whom is the captain of the vessel, the Russian Embassy in London reported on March 14.
"According to the shipowner, the Solong team consists of five citizens of the Russian Federation. Among them is the captain of the vessel," the TASS news agency quoted the diplomatic mission as saying.
The report says that the captain, whose name is not specified, has been detained by British law enforcement agencies and is currently under investigation, he has been provided with an interpreter and a lawyer.
The embassy added that all the crew members are alive and unharmed, their condition is not cause for concern.
Tanker and cargo ship collided off the northeast coast of England on March 10. A helicopter, an airplane, rescue boats and nearby vessels with fire extinguishing equipment were sent to the scene. Sky News channel announced the rescue of all 37 sailors on board the ships, but later it was reported that one sailor was missing. At the same time, Lloyd's List magazine reported that the ship was carrying sodium cyanide.
According to the BBC, a 59-year-old man was arrested in connection with the collision and charged with negligent manslaughter. Currently, the man remains in custody, and the police are continuing to establish all the circumstances of the incident.
