Preservatives are special additives that extend the shelf life of products by protecting them from bacteria and oxidation. On March 19, Evgeny Belousov, a gastroenterologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg clinic), PhD, told Izvestia about how they affect the human body with regular use.

"Some preservatives can cause allergic reactions. For example, sulfites, which are often added to wine and dried fruits, can cause breathing problems or skin rashes in people with hypersensitivity," he said.

Individual supplements, such as antioxidants or stabilizers, can negatively affect the intestinal microflora. This leads to bloating, discomfort and other digestive disorders, Belousov added.

"The long-term use of certain preservatives is associated with the development of dangerous diseases. For example, nitrates and nitrites, which are used to preserve meat products, can be converted into nitrosamines in the body, substances that increase the risk of cancer," the doctor said.

He also warned that some preservatives can act as endocrine disruptors, causing hormonal disruption. According to him, this is especially dangerous for people with chronic diseases.

Among the most harmful preservatives, he singled out sodium benzoate, which is found in soda and sauces. In combination with vitamin C, it can form benzene, a dangerous carcinogenic substance.

"Potassium salt is used in various foods, but its excess can disrupt the balance of electrolytes in the body. Hydroxytostearic acid is used in confectionery products and can cause hormonal disorders," the specialist added.

To minimize the harm from consuming products with preservatives, the expert advised giving preference to fresh and natural products. She also recommended that you carefully study the composition on the packaging and avoid products with a lot of additives.

On March 14, DDX Fitness trainer and nutritionist Artyom Opalnitsky told Izvestia about the dangers of whole-grain bread and freshly squeezed juice. According to him, whole-grain bread can be made from genetically modified wheat, which can cause rashes and increase cholesterol levels. When making freshly squeezed juice, only sugar remains from the fruits themselves due to the destruction of useful dietary fibers.
