A conference on the study and conservation of the snow leopard has opened in Kazan

The International Conference "Study and conservation of the snow Leopard in the world. Joining forces." For the first time, 180 leading experts from 12 countries of the snow leopard range gathered to discuss how to protect this rare and little-studied wildcat. A correspondent of Izvestia told about this on March 14.
Kazan was chosen as the venue for the conference for a reason: the republic pays great attention to the work aimed at preserving its symbol in the wild.
"The symbol of our republic on our coat of arms is a snow leopard, a winged leopard. It is symbolic for us, but for all Turks it is a totemic animal — the leopard, which, in fact, accompanied them all their lives," said Alexander Shadrikov, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Tatarstan.
According to him, all work at this event will be aimed at preserving the snow leopard, and dialogue between government, business, society and science always leads to constructive work.
The event was organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia, the Government of Tatarstan and the interregional association "Center for the Study and Conservation of the Snow Leopard "Irbis".
The opening and plenary session of the conference were attended by the head of the republic Rustam Minnikhanov, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of Russia Murad Kerimov, as well as Chairman of the General Meeting of Irbis Ali Uzdenov.
The snow leopard is one of the rarest and least studied predators found in mountainous areas. Its population is under threat due to human exposure.: reduction of natural food supply, poaching, and economic activities, including mining. Due to these factors, the number of snow leopards has decreased dramatically. To date, according to the results of the first All-Russian accounting of the snow leopard, scientists have recorded 87 leopards in the country.
