The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has extended its decision to suspend the national teams and clubs of Russia and Belarus from international competitions until May 2025, according to the organization's website on March 14.

It is noted that this decision was made during a meeting of the FIBA Executive Committee, which took place in Switzerland.

"The status of Russia and Belarus has been extended until the next meeting of the FIBA Central Council, which will be held in May 2025," the statement said.

In February, the Minister of Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Belarus, Sergei Kovalchuk, in an interview with Izvestia, noted that foreign officials had long realized that they had done something stupid by suspending athletes from Russia and Belarus from international competitions. Now they would like to get out of this situation beautifully, such efforts are slowly being made. Kovalchuk expressed hope that sooner or later the sport will return to where it was before the events in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on January 24 that Russia would continue to "patiently work" to return its athletes to the world stage.

In March 2022, FIBA suspended the national teams, as well as all men's and women's clubs in Russia and Belarus, amid the situation in Ukraine. The Euroleague made a similar decision.
