European producers have called the consequences of US President Donald Trump's possible imposition of 200% duties on alcoholic beverages from the European Union (EU) countries a "potential death" for producers. This was reported on March 14 by the French newspaper Le Figaro.

According to the newspaper, Trump's threat "caught French winegrowers by surprise": the United States is the leading export market for European champagne, and now the trade war will worsen the reduction in supplies of the most famous wines.

"We are tired of being systematically sacrificed for problems that have nothing to do with our own," said the Director General of the Federation of Wine and Spirits Exporters.

At the same time, the French government has already stated that the authorities will not succumb to threats and will protect their trade sectors. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also confirmed that the EU will defend its interests, while at the same time it is open to negotiations.

The day before, Trump posted on the Truth Social network about the introduction of 200 percent tariffs on alcoholic beverages from France and other EU countries in response to the introduction of a 50% whiskey duty in America. He also noted that these actions will have a positive impact on the US economy.
