The main task of the new Russian Ambassador to Washington, Alexander Darchiev, is to strengthen Russian-American relations. This was announced on March 14 by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov to RIA Novosti.

"To develop relations and defend the interests of the Russian Federation," he said, answering the question of what tasks Russian President Vladimir Putin sets for the ambassador.

On March 6, Putin appointed Alexander Darchiev, director of the North Atlantic Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, as Russia's ambassador to the United States. He also became Russia's permanent observer at the Organization of American States in Washington.

On February 28, the United States issued an agrement for the appointment of Darchiev as the new Russian ambassador to Washington. The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that the note was handed over during negotiations between the delegations of Russia and the United States in Istanbul on February 27. It was clarified that Darchiev's departure to Washington is expected in the near future.
