On Monday, March 17, another lesson from the series "Conversations about important things" will take place in Russian schools and colleges. It will be dedicated to two major dates — the anniversary of the reunification of Crimea with Russia and the 100th anniversary of the famous Artek children's camp, which is a real treasure trove of the peninsula. Izvestia tells you how the lesson will go and what will be discussed with students in different classes.

"Talking about important things" on March 17 — the topic of the lesson

The history of Russia has been inextricably linked with Crimea for many centuries. March 2025 marks the 11th anniversary of the republic's incorporation into Russia. The signing of the historic document took place on March 18, 2014. As a result, two new subjects appeared in the Russian Federation: the Republic of Crimea and the federal city of Sevastopol. Today, this event is celebrated as a public holiday, which is accompanied every year by concerts and festive events throughout the country.

The pearl of the peninsula is considered to be the Artek International Children's Center, the most famous pioneer camp in Russia and one of the largest children's recreation complexes in the world. It was established in 1925 on the banks of the river of the same name on the southern coast of Crimea. It is noteworthy that his story began with several tents near the Black Sea. Now it's a real city with a stadium, a cinema, a sailing school and tennis courts. Since its opening, it has been visited by more than 2 million children from 150 countries. Among his students was the first cosmonaut of the Earth, Yuri Gagarin, who visited Artek seven times.

Throughout the year, photo exhibitions about the camp will be opened in different cities, and Artek songs will be performed in schools as part of the Melodies Instead of Bells project. Earlier, at the end of February, a Soyuz 2.1a launch vehicle with the camp's logo depicting the flames of the Artek bonfire was launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome. The event was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the international children's center.

The history of the children's center will also be discussed with schoolchildren on March 17. The topic of the lesson is designated as "The Day of the reunification of Crimea and Sevastopol with Russia. The 100th anniversary of Artek". Its purpose is to form an understanding of the historical significance of the reunification of Crimea and Sevastopol with Russia and to develop ideas about the Artek children's center as a national treasure of the country.

Interactive games and watching themed videos will help students master the topic of the lesson. Artek students from different years will join the class in the video interview format. The conversation will last 30 minutes. Teaching materials for teachers are published on the project's website.

"Conversations about important things" March 17 — lesson program

Students in grades 1-2 will be able to watch and discuss the animated videos "How it All Began" and "Artek's History and Mission." The children will learn how the pioneer camp appeared, what path Artek has traveled over a hundred years, and what its most important traditions are. They will also talk about the main attraction of the camp, the Alley of Artek Heroes, and the Artek Star award, which is awarded at the end of each shift.

In grades 3-4, students will continue their virtual journey into the fascinating world of Artek and learn how the camp is related to the development of space and science. They will also try to find an answer to the question of why the famous asteroid discovered in 1969 in Crimea was named after the children's center. Then the children will watch the video "Talking about important things with Artek residents" and get acquainted with the famous students of the center.

In grades 5-7, the video "The Story of Artek 1925-1945" is scheduled to be watched. It is dedicated to the history of the camp since its foundation and during the Great Patriotic War (WWII). As you know, many Artek residents became famous for their military exploits. Among them are the commander of the "Young Guard", Hero of the Soviet Union Ivan Turkenich and test pilot, twice Hero of the Soviet Union Amet Khan Sultan, who shot down more than 30 enemy aircraft. The camp itself continued to operate even during the war.

In grades 8-9, children will learn about the longest shift at Artek, which began in June 1941 in Crimea and ended on January 12, 1945 in Altai, where Artek residents were evacuated during the war. At the beginning of the year, the camp celebrated the 80th anniversary of its graduation.

In grades 10-11, the conversation will continue with the story of the heroic pages of the Second World War related to the Crimea and the defense of Sevastopol. They will also talk with schoolchildren and college students about the significance of the reunification of Crimea and Sevastopol with Russia and what changes have taken place in the region over the past 11 years.
