- Canada has filed a complaint with the WTO over the US tariffs imposed on steel and aluminum.

The Canadian authorities have filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the duties imposed by the United States on Canadian steel and aluminum. This was stated on March 13 in a document posted on the organization's website.
"Canada has asked the WTO to consult on disputes with the United States regarding the imposition by the United States of import duties on certain types of steel and aluminum products from Canada," the text says.
According to the Canadian authorities, the measures imposed by the United States violate Washington's obligations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) of 1994.
According to the established rules, Ottawa and Washington are given 60 days to discuss their differences and find a solution without the help of legal proceedings. If the parties fail to do so, Canada has the right to request that the dispute be resolved by the WTO commission.
On March 11, Reuters reported that US President Donald Trump had ordered an increase in import duties on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%, without excluding new restrictions. It was clarified that Canada is the largest foreign supplier of steel and aluminum to the United States.
In response, Canadian Finance Minister Dominique Leblanc announced on March 12 that Ottawa would impose 25% duties on US exports worth $20 billion. The measures will take effect on March 13. He stressed that this measure applies to steel and aluminum products, as well as additional imported American goods.
