The AFD accused Merz of trying to commit a financial coup

Alice Weidel, chairman of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, said that Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is trying to carry out a "financial coup" in order to increase military spending and help Ukraine. She stated this at the March 13 debate on the initiative to raise the national debt in the Bundestag.
According to Weidel, Merz deceived voters by agreeing with the Social Democrats on a reform that would circumvent borrowing restrictions and direct hundreds of billions of euros to defense. She stressed that this would lead to an increase in Germany's debt burden from 64% to 85% of GDP.
The politician also called on him to abandon his aspirations to become chancellor.
"Do this country a big favor, Mr. Merz. Give up the desire to become chancellor, because you can't do it," Weidel said, as quoted by RIA Novosti.
Earlier in the day, AFD Secretary Bernd Baumann said that Merz could become Chancellor of Germany for a very short time, as German voters would not forgive him for deception and fraud.
