Most often, accidents involving motorcyclists occur when the car turns from the oncoming lane — the driver of the car turns left, but does not notice the approaching motorcyclist. Viktor Potapenko, the founder of the Motostudy safe driving school and a certified BMW Motorrad instructor, told Izvestia about this on March 14. To avoid such situations, motorcyclists should blink their high beams when passing traffic lights to become more visible, as well as reduce their speed, he advised.

Another common type of accidents that motorcyclists get into is when they leave the surrounding areas when the car leaves on the right. In such situations, a motorist may also fail to notice a biker in time, as in the first type of accident, the specialist explained.

"When approaching such places, the motorcycle driver should blink the high beam so that other road users notice him. It is important to understand that a motorcyclist at a distance of 200 m is very similar to a pedestrian — it is absolutely impossible to distinguish him on the horizon," said Potapenko.

The third most popular reason for motorcycle accidents is related to alterations without a proper assessment of the environment. For example, a motorcycle driver may feel that no one is driving faster than him on the road at the moment, but often this opinion is erroneous, and someone may be driving in the next lane at a higher speed.

Also, accidents regularly occur with people who like to drive between the rows. When changing lanes, car drivers cannot see the motorcycle at a distance of 50 m from the rear. The instructor advised the motorcyclists to move only a little faster than the flow, because at any moment a car could change lanes in the next row. Finally, another reason is the bikers' incorrect assessment of the situation on the highway and the condition of the roadway.

"To reduce the risks of getting into an accident, motorcycle drivers are advised, first of all, to observe the speed limit and carefully assess the road situation, as well as take care of their own visibility: avoid blind spots, actively use sound and light signals, and use bright or reflective equipment," the motorcycle instructor added.

On February 12, it became known that sales of used motorcycles in Russia set a new record last year. In 2024, 113.6 thousand used motorcycles were sold, which is 10% more than a year earlier. The market has surpassed the mark of 100 thousand units for the second year in a row.

On January 23, it was reported that the IZH Planeta-5 became the most sought-after motorcycle in Russia by the end of 2024. The number of ads for used motorcycles increased by 30.4% year—on-year, while interest in them increased by 12.8%. The average price of a used bike in 2024 was 183 thousand rubles.
