Interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has ratified the country's constitutional declaration for the transitional period, which was developed by a special committee, Syria TV reported on March 13.

It is noted that the transition period in the republic will last five years. During this time, the signed document will represent the legal basis for the Arab republic, while preserving Islamic jurisprudence as the main source of legislation.

"The Committee confirmed that the legitimacy of the declaration is due to the desire to build a new Syria, while retaining the name of the state as the "Syrian Arab Republic" and specifying the religion of the head of state as Islam," the media reports.

The committee on the development of the declaration also pointed out that one of its provisions enshrines freedom of the media and guarantees women's rights to education and work.

Earlier, on March 11, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Russia would like to see Syria a prosperous country and is ready to work together with other states to stabilize the situation in the republic. The Russian president's spokesman stressed that Moscow wants stability in the highly volatile Middle East.

Prior to that, on March 10, Russia's Permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, confirmed that Russia and the United States were cooperating on the Syrian issue. On that day, the UN Security Council held consultations on Syria, requested by Moscow and Washington.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on March 8 that 134 civilians, including at least 13 women and five children, were killed in clashes in Banias, Latakia and Jableh.
