As NATO expands, it creates additional threats to Russia's security in the Arctic. At the moment, military and political tensions in the region are growing. This was announced on March 13 by Vladislav Maslennikov, Director of the Department of European Problems at the Russian Foreign Ministry.

According to him, the expansion of the North Atlantic Alliance poses a threat to Russia's security.

"The accession of Finland and Sweden to the North Atlantic Alliance and the increasing NATO presence in the region have provoked an increase in military and political tensions," the diplomat said at the X International Scientific and Practical Conference "The Far East and the Arctic: Sustainable Development."

It is noted that due to NATO's actions in the region, there is a risk of creating new challenges and threats to the security of the Russian Federation and its national interests.

As Maslennikov pointed out, the North Atlantic Alliance plans to engage in military training activities near Russia's northern borders.

"Judging by the Pentagon's Arctic strategy updated in July last year, we should expect an intensification of NATO's military training activities near our northern borders," he stressed.

Earlier, on December 18 last year, Nikolai Patrushev, Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the Maritime Board, said that tensions in the Arctic region were growing as a result of NATO's actions.

Prior to that, on September 17, Commander of the Air Force The United States in Europe and Africa, General James Hecker, said that the North Atlantic Alliance is exploring the idea of creating a joint air operations control center in the Arctic.
