Most corms of spring and early summer flowering — hyacinths, daffodils, tulips, crocuses, snowdrops, scylla, lilies — are bought and planted for winter, she noted. According to her, it makes sense to buy exclusively gladioli and dahlias in the spring. Marina Tatarenko, a biologist and lecturer at the Department of Teaching Methods of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the State University of Education, told Izvestia on March 14.

They are planted when the average daily temperatures steadily reach +10... + 12 degrees, the earth is well warmed up, and there is no possibility of recurrent frosts, otherwise bacterial diseases will not allow flower buds to develop normally, and the plants will get sick. Spring in the Moscow region is promised early, so gladioli and dahlias can already be germinated in early April, the biologist emphasized.

"About three weeks before planting, gladiolus bulbs and dahlia tubers are removed from storage and germinated to achieve the appearance of roots and small sprouts. They are carefully cleaned of last year's husks, treated with potassium permanganate or fungicides and placed in a fairly bright place, but not under direct sunlight," Tatarenko said.

She also added that gladioli can be spread out on a wet napkin if they are lying on a cool veranda, or placed in wet sawdust or sand if they are in the apartment. Dahlia tubers for growing can be placed in a container with soil.

"Some stores are now selling discounted bulbs of tulips and other bulbs that were not bought in the fall. Anyone who buys them should take into account that these flowers, even if they are taken after planting, will be small and will not bloom either in spring or summer, except next year," concluded Tatarenko.

On March 13, Igor Koptev, director of the PEC Service Department, told Izvestia about the most demanding seedlings for transportation. According to him, magnolia is most sensitive to transportation — the plant has fragile and vulnerable roots to cold air. Fir and thuja trees are no less susceptible to low temperatures.
