Russia is exclusively engaged in the development of the Northern Sea Route (NSR), and this route is a national treasure of the state. This was announced on March 13 by Nikolai Patrushev, Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the Maritime Board, in an interview with the National Defense magazine.

He also noted that Russia seeks to use the Northern Sea Route not alone solely for its own needs, but to involve other countries in this route.

"One of the most important tasks facing the state is to increase the competitiveness of the Northern Sea Route, not only within Russia or regionally, but also on a global scale," Patrushev said.

In addition, he added that the Northern Sea Route is the most convenient route for coastal transportation, which has no other routes. According to him, the NSR has prospects for transporting various cargoes from the West and East, and is also a short route between Europe and Asia.

"In the near future, we plan to expand the capabilities of seaports and terminals, both directly along the Northern Sea Route, and in cities and towns where cargo transshipment from sea to river and rail transport is necessary," said the chairman of the Maritime Board.

Patrushev also recalled that the federal project "Development of the Great Northern Sea Route" was organized in Russia, within the framework of which the formation of a single economic, transport and logistics space will begin in 2025. This, in turn, will be able to expand transportation opportunities and connect the northwestern part of the Russian Federation with the Far East.

On February 28, it was reported that Russia was going to invest almost 2 trillion rubles in the development of the Northern Sea Route by 2035. It is expected that 150 new vessels will be built as part of the Northern Sea Route project and 12 icebreakers will be added to the existing nine. In addition, it is planned to modernize the coastal infrastructure, Arctic airports and the construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals.
