- Putin: foreign mercenaries of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are not protected by the Geneva Convention on Prisoners of War

Foreign fighters who have been recruited into the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are not protected by the Geneva Convention, but they have the right to be treated humanely. This was announced on March 12 by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting at the control center of the Kursk group of the Russian Armed Forces.
"I would also like to remind you that foreign mercenaries are not subject to the 1949 Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War," the Russian leader said.
In addition, Putin noted that all prisoners of war are treated and will be treated humanely in the Russian Federation, regardless of whether they are foreigners or not.
On the same day, the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Army General Valery Gerasimov, reported to the President of the Russian Federation that the Russian Armed Forces had liberated more than 1,100 square kilometers of territory in the Kursk border region. He stressed that Kiev's plans in the Kursk region had failed. In addition, according to him, the Ukrainian Armed Forces suffered heavy losses during the liberation of Malaya Lokna in the Kursk region by the Russian military.
