Iran's Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called the US statements about its readiness to negotiate with Tehran a deception of world public opinion. His words were quoted by the ISNA news agency on March 12.

He noted that, despite the promises of the American president, negotiations with the United States will not lead to the lifting of sanctions, but will only increase pressure on Iran.

"We sat down and negotiated for several years, and this man (US President Donald Trump. - Ed.) threw the completed and signed [agreements] off the table," Khamenei said.

He also noted that the US statements about its intention to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons are empty threats.

"If Iran really wanted to build nuclear weapons, America would not have been able to stop us," the Iranian leader concluded.

Earlier, on March 10, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia would assist in resolving the Iranian nuclear dossier "in a peaceful manner." Peskov also recalled that Iran is a sovereign country that independently formulates a position on foreign policy issues.
