Moscow considers Greece's decision to revoke the Rossiya Segodnya correspondent's accreditation as another manifestation of a course of confrontation. This was announced on March 12 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"We consider this decision as another manifestation of the course chosen by the Greek government towards confrontation with our country, an integral part of which is disregard for its international obligations in ensuring media pluralism and freedom of access to information, blocking Russian media and deliberately obstructing the normal work of journalists," the ministry said in a statement on its website.

Zakharova stressed that this is not the first time that Athens has shown unfriendliness towards representatives of the Russian media.

She recalled that in 2024 Greece refused to extend the accreditation of the correspondent of the Parliamentary Newspaper, in 2023 the journalist of the Rossiyskaya Gazeta could not start working in the country, and in 2022 the local information office of the Sputnik agency was closed.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry demanded that international organizations and structures, including UNESCO and Director General Audrey Azoulay, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as the representative of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) on freedom, assess the relevant actions of Greece.

"If they continue to ignore the arbitrariness of the Greek authorities, it will be a signal for Athens to continue its practice of clamping down on freedom of speech and pluralism of opinions," Zakharova added.

On February 25, the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the OSCE demanded the organization's response to sanctions against the Russian media. The representative office stated that the European Union's decision to adopt new restrictions on Russian media is illegal and politicized, noting that it violates "international obligations in the field of press pluralism, access to information and media freedom."
