- The expert warned about the negative consequences of excessive consumption of omega-3

Excessive consumption of omega-3 can lead to side effects, said Dmitry Gurov, head of the Sberbank Pharmacy. At the same time, analysts of the Rambler&Co media holding and Sberbank found out how often Russians take such polyunsaturated fatty acids, and told Izvestia about the results of the study on March 13.
"Excessive consumption of omega-3 fatty acids can lead to side effects such as upset stomach and other effects on the body. Too low a dosage will not have a noticeable effect," Gurov said.
He clarified that not all combinations of omega-3 with other vitamins are beneficial. For example, when the drug is combined with vitamin K, the risk of bleeding increases, since omega-3 thins the blood, and vitamin K promotes its clotting.
At the same time, according to the results of the study, 44% of respondents take polyunsaturated fatty acids constantly, a quarter (25%) — as needed, regardless of the season, 18% — only in winter, 13% — in spring or autumn. At the same time, 30% of respondents regularly take omega-3 in the form of a separate dietary supplement, 13% get the necessary amount from food, 10% take it in combination with vitamins E, K, D, and group B, 4% — as part of vitamin and mineral complexes, 2% — sports nutrition. Only 41% do not use at all.
Experts also clarified that in January and February 2025, Russians purchased omega-3 by 2% more than in the last two months of 2024. The study showed that 22% of the respondents omega-3 helps to support the immune system, 17% associate regular intake of the drug with improving the functioning of the cardiovascular system. 3% each noted that such fatty acids help them fight insomnia and fatigue, cope with dry skin and dull complexion, another 3% emphasized that the drug allows them to better tolerate sports activities and promotes muscle recovery.
Earlier, on February 23, Olga Chistik, a therapist at the Scandinavian Health Center, told Izvestia that vitamin D supports the health of the neuromuscular system, and B vitamins help convert proteins, fats, and carbohydrates into energy that the body uses throughout the day. Vitamin E also strengthens the walls of blood vessels, improves reproductive function in men, and coenzyme Q10 is beneficial for heart health.
