The doctor spoke about the effect of intestinal health on the beauty of hair

A good appearance of hair is an indicator of body health. Vera Seryozhina, an expert at the LabQuest medical company, told Izvestia on March 15 about how the intestinal condition affects them.
"If the balance of beneficial bacteria is not disrupted, the body successfully absorbs the necessary vitamins and trace elements, including B vitamins and iron, which are critically important components for hair growth and health. For example, B vitamins help strengthen hair follicles and protect hair from falling out, while iron prevents hair thinning and increased fragility," she said.
Seryozhina noted that proper nutrition plays a key role in maintaining intestinal health. The doctor advised making fiber one of the most important elements of the diet, it is the basis for the nutrition of beneficial intestinal bacteria. The daily norm is 8-10 servings of plant foods such as vegetables, fruits, greens and whole grains. So, one serving can be considered an apple, a plate of porridge, salad or stewed vegetables.
"When the balance of beneficial bacteria is disrupted, the absorption of vitamins and trace elements worsens, and the risk of inflammatory processes in the body increases. This can be manifested not only by brittle hair, but also by deterioration of the skin condition — the appearance of rashes, itching and dryness. Moreover, pathogenic microorganisms can develop in the intestine — fungi, helminths and protozoa, which release toxins that worsen the complexion and general condition of the skin," the specialist explained.
Stress also affects the state of the intestines. In such conditions, the beneficial microflora is reduced, and the processes of nutrient absorption worsen, she noted. In addition, the microbiota stops producing important neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which not only increases stress, but also creates a vicious circle in which digestion worsens and appearance suffers.
"To understand the situation, it is necessary to carry out diagnostics. Modern analyses make it possible to determine the composition of the microbiota, the presence of fungi and parasites. Depending on the results, complex therapy may be required, including antiparasitic drugs, dietary adjustments, and taking probiotics and prebiotics," Serezhina said.
She warned against arbitrarily increasing the intake of fiber or probiotics without consulting a doctor — this can worsen the situation: an increased amount of fiber sometimes provokes inflammation and pain in the intestines. After normalization of the organ, the condition of the hair and skin begins to improve after 1-1.5 months.
On January 28, Ekaterina Kashukh, a gastroenterologist, told Izvestia about unusual symptoms indicating diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. For example, bad breath can be a sign of gastroesophageal reflux disease, a chronic inflammation of the lower esophagus. Deterioration of the skin, hair and nails, and a sudden change in appearance can also signal a malfunction of the digestive system.
