Canadian Finance Minister Dominique Leblanc said on Tuesday, March 12, that Ottawa would impose 25 percent duties on $20 billion worth of American exports from March 13.

"The government of Canada, following the dollar—for-dollar approach, will impose retaliatory duties of 25% on an additional $29.8 billion of Canadian imports from the United States from midnight tomorrow, March 13, 2025," he said in an interview with reporters.

He also stressed that this measure applies to steel and aluminum products, as well as additional imported American goods. The minister clarified that this step is a response to the increase in duties on steel and aluminum from the United States.

Canadian diplomats will hold talks with their American counterparts in Washington on March 13 to resolve trade disputes, Leblanc added.

Earlier, on March 11, Reuters reported that US President Donald Trump had ordered an increase in import duties on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%, without excluding new restrictions. Canada is the largest foreign supplier of steel and aluminum to the United States.
