Sailors of the Russian FESCO transport company rescued a cat from a locked cargo container on a ship sailing from Istanbul to Novorossiysk. The carrier informed Izvestia about this on March 12.

It is not known how the animal ended up on board — the containers arrive on the ship closed. The crew found the cat already on the way when they heard meowing during a routine detour.

"It is strictly forbidden to open the containers, so the unlucky traveler had to be fed through a narrow slit and watered with a straw during the entire voyage," FESCO said.

The cat was released while unloading in Novorossiysk. Now the animal lives in the port under the care of the company's employees, while the carrier noted that, according to customs regulations, the pet's presence in Russia is considered illegal. FESCO employees want to put the cat in good hands, but the company fears that he faces "deportation" to Turkey.

Trial lawyer Ilya Vasilchuk, in turn, told Izvestia that, from the point of view of Russian laws, cats are property. For this reason, they cannot be deported to their country of origin — the cat must be transferred to a shelter, where a new owner can pick it up.

If the original owner of the animal is revealed, then the pet must be returned, while FESCO will be able to count on monetary compensation.

Earlier, in January, a dog that had been trapped in a pipe for more than a week was rescued in Nizhny Novgorod. The animal hid in the pipeline, afraid of fireworks. Local residents informed the authorities about the stuck pet.
