The slightest hormonal malfunction can seriously harm your health. Olga Ulankina, Candidate of Medical Sciences, expert at the Hemotest laboratory, told Izvestia on March 16 about which diseases an imbalance can provoke.

According to her, endocrine diseases most often develop when there is a shortage or overabundance of a hormone. Failure can occur at any age. Sometimes, in the early stages, symptoms of hormonal imbalance are attributed to fatigue and lack of sleep.

The doctor called diabetes mellitus the most common endocrine disease. In Russia, almost 5 million adults and children live with this diagnosis, but in reality the number of cases is much higher, she noted.

"Diabetes mellitus develops due to disorders of carbohydrate metabolism. Normally, glucose from food should enter the cells, where it is converted into energy. In order for sugar to be absorbed correctly, you need insulin, a hormone that is produced in the pancreas. If there is not enough of it or the receptors lose sensitivity to it, glucose is absorbed incorrectly and continues to circulate in the blood, gradually destroying and poisoning the body," the specialist explained.

She recalled that in the absence of proper treatment, diabetes can lead to blindness, kidney failure, disorders of the nervous system, as well as provoke a stroke or heart attack.

"The disease is characterized by a "quiet" course: at the initial stage, a person may simply feel constant weakness. He wakes up already sluggish, and especially severe fatigue sets in after eating. It's all about the lack of energy that results from improper glucose uptake. Unexplained weight loss, constant thirst, dry skin, vision problems, a feeling of numbness and tingling in the fingers should also be alerted. All these signs may indicate the development of diabetes," Ulankina said.

The specialist stressed that in order not to miss the onset of a dangerous disease, it is enough to check blood glucose levels once a year. In case of any deviation from the norm, you should consult a doctor.

Another group of common endocrine disorders is associated with a malfunction of the thyroid gland, which produces the hormones T3 and T4. An overabundance or lack of them can cause hypothyroidism.

"The reason for concern should be constant weakness, unexplained weight loss or gain, frequent swelling, excessive sweating or constant chills, hair loss, rapid heartbeat. Thyroid diseases can occur at any age. Those who have had cases of these ailments in their family are at special risk," Ulankina concluded.

On March 12, Pavel Nizin, a urologist at the Sberbank Health medical company, told Izvestia about the symptoms of kidney disease. He noted that this can be indicated by edema of various localizations — the face, arms, legs. They occur due to fluid retention due to impaired renal excretion of sodium and water. The doctor reminded that changes in urination may also be a symptom of the presence of pathology.
