- The Dutch Parliament voted against the country's participation in the rearmament of Europe

The majority of the Dutch parliament voted against the kingdom's participation in the European Commission's initiative to rearm Europe. This was reported on March 12 by the Dutch edition of Volkskrant.
The Dutch House of Representatives voted 73 to 71 in favor of the country's non-participation in the European rearmament plan. This initiative was supported only by representatives of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy.
According to the newspaper, the parliament's decision puts Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schof in a difficult position. After all, earlier, during an emergency meeting of the heads of government of the European Union (EU), the politician spoke in favor of implementing the plan. As a result, due to the parliament's decision, Schof will have to return to Brussels to amend the proposal of the European Commission.
The European Commission is expected to demonstrate a more detailed plan next week. After that, the EU member states will be able to vote.
On March 8, the Financial Times newspaper reported on the growing tension between France and Germany over the issue of the rearmament of countries that have not joined the bloc. Berlin noted that it is necessary to allocate €150 billion for the defense industry of non-EU partners. However, Paris does not agree with this.
During a speech to reporters in Brussels on March 4, EC President Ursula von der Leyen spoke about the rearmament plan. It aims to use the financial levers of the EU to assist the members of the association in a rapid and significant increase in defense spending. A couple of days later, she announced that during the summit in Brussels, EU leaders had approved a plan for the militarization of Europe. Its amount amounted to €800 billion.
