A court has sentenced Levan Beruashvili, a Georgian mercenary of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), to 24 years in prison in absentia for a terrorist attack in the Kursk region and mercenary activities. This was announced on March 12 by the Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation.
"The investigation and the court have established that Beruashvili <... He is engaged in recruiting, training and financing mercenaries for their participation in the armed conflict [in Ukraine], as well as taking a direct part in it for financial remuneration," the department's Telegram channel says.
According to the investigation, in August 2024, the mercenary committed an illegal armed invasion of the territory of the Kursk region as part of Ukrainian formations. There, the defendant committed crimes against the civilian population.
"At the request of investigator Beruashvili, a preventive measure in the form of detention was chosen in absentia, he was put on the international wanted list," the Investigative Committee reported.
Earlier that day, Lithuanian AFU mercenary Sharunas Jasyukevicius was sentenced in absentia to 23 years in prison for invading the Kursk region. He threatened residents of the region, and also fired at Russian military personnel and law enforcement officers.
