March 15 is a special national holiday Fedot Vetronos: omens, prohibitions

There are many weather-related holidays in the national calendar. One of them is Fedot Vetronos. It is celebrated annually in the first month of spring, on March 15th. The people believed that the incoming heat was deceptive, and the thaw could be replaced by frosts and strong winds. Therefore, special attention was paid to weather signs. Izvestia tells us what beliefs exist on Fedotov's day, what can and cannot be done on this date.
What holiday is celebrated on March 15, 2025
Fedot Vetronos, like most Slavic holidays, combines pagan and Christian traditions. It owes its name to the Christian hieromartyr Theodotus, Bishop of Cyrene, whom the church honors on this day.
The saint lived in the fourth century and suffered for Christ during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Licinius. During his lifetime, Theodotus became famous for his steadfastness, devotion to the faith, as well as the gift of healing and miracle-working. He openly denounced pagan idols and converted many pagans to Christianity.
In Russia, the day of his memory was called Fedot Vetronos, or Fedotov Day. Another name is Fedot Snow Drift. It appeared due to the fact that at the beginning of spring there were not only winds, but also snowstorms that swept the roads.
There are many sayings among the people about this: "Fedot Vetronos pokes his nose everywhere," "Fedot is angry, it seems, and the sun is baking him." And if a severe frost suddenly struck and truly winter weather was established, then they said: "Fedot came, but not the one."
What not to do, what superstitions were there in Russia about Fedot Vetronos
On Fedotov's day, the peasants were doing household chores, trying not to leave their homes so that the wind would not blow up the disease. The women did the housework and prepared the seeds for seedlings. And the men replenished their supplies of birch bark, from which they then made various utensils. It was believed that the bark of a tree harvested on a holiday would last a long time, it would be better to keep both warm and cold.
However, some household chores were forbidden. For example, you can't darn things or sew buttons on this day. According to popular beliefs, otherwise you can sew "troubles" and "sew up" luck.
It is not recommended to make purchases on Fedota, including the purchase of indoor plants and clothing. Flowers will take away the energy of the household, and things will quickly become unusable. Also, you should not raise money found on the street, because there may be a conspiracy or damage to it.
