The European Union (EU) may have a Common European system for the return of migrants (Common European System for Returns). The relevant proposal was made by the European Commission (EC). This was reported by the Politico newspaper on March 11.

According to the newspaper, the proposal involves improving the process of expelling migrants, tougher penalties for non-compliance with the deportation decree and the creation of "return points" outside the EU, where migrants awaiting deportation will be accommodated. Such provisions of the system were named by European Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner and MEP Henna Virkkunen.

"Our citizens expect effective measures on the issue of migrants. When people who do not have a permit to stay in the EU still stay, it undermines the credibility of the entire migration policy and reduces Europe's ability to attract and retain new minds and talents," says MP Virkkunen.

In addition to the above-mentioned functions of the new system, it is assumed that national authorities will receive expanded powers, and deported migrants who pose a threat to the EU will receive an automatic ban on entry to all EU countries.

On October 4, 2024, it was reported that 14 of the 27 EU member states signed a document calling on the European Commission (EC) to tighten rules on the return of illegal migrants to EU countries. Three countries have also joined the letter: Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. This happened after a series of elections in some EU countries, in which the issue of migration became dominant, and signs of growing support for stricter controls.
