Employees of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) were instructed to destroy classified documents and information about the organization's personnel. This was reported on March 11 by the American newspaper The New York Times.

"First, chop up as many documents as possible, then prepare the bags for incineration when the shredder is unavailable or needs a break," Erica Carr, Executive secretary of USAID, quotes the publication as saying in an email to employees.

It is noted that the documents to be destroyed may be related to lawsuits filed against the agency and the administration of US President Donald Trump after mass layoffs at USAID.

Earlier, on March 10, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Washington was officially closing 83% of USAID programs. According to him, within the framework of 5,200 canceled contracts, tens of billions of dollars were spent in ways that do not meet the basic national interests of the United States. On the same day, the head of the Department of Public Administration Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk, called this decision tough but necessary for the country.

On February 3, Musk announced the launch of the USAID liquidation process. According to him, the agency cannot be restored and it needs to be closed. At the same time, US President Donald Trump called the agency's leaders radical lunatics.
