Romanian presidential candidate declares the end of democracy in the country

Diana Shoshoake, MEP and leader of the parliamentary party S.O.S Romania, will submit documents to the Central Election Bureau of Romania on March 13 to register as a presidential candidate. This is stated in a letter from the politician to US President Donald Trump, which is available to Izvestia.
"On Thursday, March 13, I will re-submit my candidacy for the presidential election, having fulfilled all the legal conditions. The Central Election Commission and the Central Election Bureau, which are not courts of general jurisdiction and have no right to prohibit the nomination of any candidate, have become unconstitutional censors who revoke, without appeal, the right of some Romanians to run and the right of other Romanians to vote for these candidates," wrote Diana Shoshoake.
She stressed that the interference of the Romanian Constitutional Court in the cases of presidential election candidates is an unprecedented event and de facto cancels democracy in Romania, an EU and NATO member state and a strategic partner of the United States.
"To return to democracy, it is necessary that all candidates who meet the legal requirements are allowed to run, and the people are sovereign and have the right to elect a president at their discretion. Otherwise, we must accept the end of democracy in Romania and the futility of elections, which turn into a waste of money," the politician concluded.
In October 2024, Diana Shoshoake put forward her candidacy for President of Romania, but the country's Constitutional Court banned her from running. The judges decided that the politician does not respect the constitution because of statements about Romania's membership in NATO and the EU. The MEP proposed holding a referendum on Bucharest's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.
On February 26, the opposition presidential candidate Calin Georgescu was taken to the prosecutor's office for questioning. He was later released on his own recognizance. At a rally in Bucharest on March 1, Georgescu said he would continue to fight for the presidency. On the same day, a rally was held in his support.
Later, on March 8, the Constitutional Court of Romania rejected appeals against the registration of the candidacy of Calin Georgescu for the presidency. According to the court's press release, the decision is final and will be brought to the attention of the Central Election Bureau.
