The political events taking place in Romania are a caricature of democracy, which the American side also recognizes. This was announced on March 12 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"When I was still communicating with American information specialists, even the Americans, realizing their full responsibility, not their own, but their regimes, for what is happening in Romania, which is under the umbrella of North Atlantic influence, even they are already laughing out loud, because the country has been turned into I do not even know what." — she shared on Sputnik radio.

The diplomat also stated that the course of the elections in Romania does not really coincide with the country's legal norms.

"It's just a caricature of democracy," she concluded.

On March 9, Romania's Central Election Commission (CEC) denied registration to opposition politician Calin Georgescu, deciding that the documents he submitted did not comply with the requirements of the law. This decision sparked protests in Bucharest, which escalated into clashes with the police.

Later, on March 11, the Constitutional Court of Romania upheld the CEC's decision rejecting Georgescu's registration for the presidential election. The opposition leader himself called this step a blow to democracy.

Presidential elections in Romania will be held on May 4.
